good Ranger builds
I was wondering if anyone has a good ranger build...
I tried a good 20 of 'em and I still get owned...
my ranger/monk is pretty good except the damage is fairly low...
I have power shot, dual shot, apply poison, comfort animal, charm animal, vital blessing, mending, and rebirth... I'm at level 20 so I was so annoyed at how underpowered I feel my ranger is... please save me from utter destruction!

Look in the Ranger Basics in the Builds forum.
Speaking of which, this should be in the builds forum.

Drop the pet, play it as a mesmer with a bow. And, yeah, use the search button.

try the ball of smite
R/Mo
Druids Armor
Apply Poison
Savage Shot
Debilitate Shot
Pin Down
Distraction Shot
Whirling Defense or Balthazars Aura
Symbol of Wrath or Balthazars Aura
Shield Of Judgement
generally max out smite and expertise 12 - 15 then put in as much as u can in marksmanship wilderness survival is not really needed since it will cost like 2 energy to apply poison etc this build is if u have a solid monk on your team to keep ya going
bassically do what u normally do with your ranger when trouble hits use whirling defense stand there smite them with wrath or aura...if multiple people are after u throw the shield on then smite them while applying poison....u can also pin them down and use wrath then keep poisoning them which is annoying
um this isnt THE best template but its fun u can give it a try if ya like

Pets are useless ... they really are. Until some sort of better control can be added they not only put a damper on your potentially lethal skill bar but black out your skills when the damn thing dies ... also mending is useless ... it kill a energy regen for what a plus 2 or 3 regen? not worth it
I'll give it to ya in a nutshell ... as a R/Mo ... test out these skills and make a combo that works for you ...
Offensive
========
Judges Insight + Barrage ... (I thought everyone knew of this one)
Tigers Fury + any bow attack combos
Debilitating shot, its one of the top skills a ranger has
Pin Down + Distracting Shot, another 2 very useful skills
Defensive
========
You wont really have enough to throw in Balthazaars Aura because it costs 25 so leave that to the monks.
Symbol of Wrath is good, Signet of Judgement is great.
Throw Dirt, I cant say how much I love this skill
Breeze over Troll Unguent ... troll takes to long to cast
Mark of Protection is decent ... its a free 10 seconds of attack ... not many people will sit there for 10 seconds and attack and not do any damage
Good luck on that win!

Well the builds that I have had success in. In HoH I do bring frozen soil but in these builds you can sub it in adn out.All ranger build should have Whirling Defense and distracting shot, they are that good. All ranger need 13 to 14 expertise in there skill it is highly important.
My new favorite damage build is.
Melandru's Arrows {elite}
Dual Shot
Penetrating attack
Tiger fury
Distracting shot- A must for any ranger build
Whirling defense - A must for any ranger build
Pin down- just about a must
Rez /healing spring / Troll urgent / or the frozen soil
This build is only good on people that are enchanted then agine what team doesn’t have someone or everyone who has an enactment on them. I gone toe to toe with many a warrior with both us full health “they were enchanted” and won they usually always say you a though ranger not know that Melandru's Arrows kill enchanted people very quickly.
A good solid build that I have had a lot of success: "Old faith full "
Penetrating attack- this is the best ranger attack in the game 3 sec recharge and hits hard.
Poison {elite}
Ride the wind
Distasting shot
Concussion shot
Pin down
Whirling defense
Rez /healing spring / Troll urgent / or the frozen soil
This solid build built to support the team poison everyone snare and shut down caster if you can get them with a concussion shot. I have tried different variations but this one seems to be the best or worked out best for me.
I have tried to be a good interrupting ranger and you know what without Mesmer spells to help you out it is near imposable to interrupt the majority of spells. Rangers just don’t have the energy to bring more than one mesmer spell I have druid armor and have 31 energy. You haft to guess when to shoot your arrow to interrupt some who spells cast 1sec or less. The spells Arcane Conundrum and Migraine {elite} make the caster take twice as long to cast there spells giving you time to hit them with your concussion shot. Once there dazed as long as they cant take it off there pretty much shut down.
I give you some successful interrupting skills sets if your and ranger / mesmer
Arcane Conundrum / Migraine {elite} if you have it
Penetrating attack / Punishing shot {elite} if you do not have Migraine
Ride the wind
Distasting shot
Salvage shot
Concussion shot
Pin down
Rez /healing spring / Troll urgent / or the frozen soil
If your secondary not a mesmer then do this. it really not as successful as the other builds but you can cause some havic.
incendairy arrows- I really don’t not like this skill do the fact it only last it last 8 sec with a 24 sec recharge. That a 16 sec to wait till recharge is to long.
Penetrating attack
Favorable winds
Distasting shot
Tiger fury
Concussion shot
Pin down
Rez /healing spring / Troll urgent / or the frozen soil
I have all elite skilsl but this one “Practiced Stance” but with it might make choking gas good. This build I have not tried but it look like you could have choking gas on the entire time.
Practiced Stance {elite} this makes your preparations recharge 50% and last 47% longer with 13 in expertise
Choking gas
Penetrating attack
Favorable winds
Distasting shot
Tiger fury
Pin down
Rez /healing spring / Troll urgent / or the frozen soil
A lot of my build don’t really use a heal well because most team have monks and ranger are usually last to be targeted I usually don’t haft use them. With an expertise of 13 Whirling defense last 19 sec and pin down lets you run away
My stats always look like this I make variations to some mesmer attributes and beast maters time to time but the others stay the same.
11 expertise +2 hat minor rune = 13
10 marksman ship +3 sup rune = 13
8 wilderness survival +1 minor =9
Either 6 into Beast mastery + 1 minor rune= 7 let tiger furry be on for 8 sec
Or 6 into mesmer spells line
Hope this helps any rangers out.

This is a fairly unconventional approach to the ranger but you may like it. I am planning on using him in the random team arena so please dont flame me for the use of a self heal.
Illusionary Weaponry
Serpents Quickness
Quickening Zephyr
Troll Ungent
Conjure Phantasm
Ethereal Burden
Rez Signet
Dryders Defense
If you were hoping to play a backline fighter this wont work. Equip him with a sword, Pop Illusionary Weaponry. Charge your target and pop Tiger. Pound the crap out of em for 5ish seconds then pop Serpents quickness (which will override tigers so time it carefully). SQ will reduce the recast timer on Illusionary weaponry so it will be almost ready to reapply when it expires, during the gap use Dryders defense Conjure Phantasm or Ethereal Burden depending on the situation then reapply Illusionary Weaponry. Rinse repeat.
Kinda weird but pretty fun

For pve buff stack and use barrage+tigers fury. Trapper is possible but not with certain teams that don't give you the time for it.
For pvp, I always liked this one:
R/Me
Echo+Debilitating Shot
14 expertise+whatever you want

Agreed. Try this:
R/E
Marskmanship: 12 (10+2)
Expertise: 9 (8+1)
Beast Mastery: 9 (8+1)
Wilderness Survival: 8 (7+1)
Water Magic: 8
Tiger's Fury (with BM9, lasts 9 seconds, recharges in 10, for 90% high speed action)
Dual Shot (doubles the damage from all your buffs)
Poison Arrow {elite}
Distracting Shot
Troll Unguent
Ignite Arrows (Kindle Arrows is better for sniping, but Ignite Arrows is awesome when attacking groups)
Conjure Frost
Favorable Winds
Now, you have three buffs: Favorable Winds, Conjure Frost, and Ignite or Kindle Arrows, plus the speed enhancer Tiger's Fury to increase your damage by 50% for your bow and all the buffs, plus Poison Arrow for even more damage between shots. Do the math, or just make the build and give it a whirl, it's an effective, damaging build. Using a max damage bow, it does 41-54 damage per hit to an 60AL target, plus 4 pips DoT from the poison, 74-84 damage for Dual Shot, and I'm doing those calculations using Ignite Arrows -- the damage is higher for Kindle Arrows, plus if you really want maximum damage, switch out Distracting Shot and Troll Unguent for a couple of damage boosting bow attacks like Power Shot or Penetrating Attack for even more damage per minute. And with Tiger's Fury, 90% of the time you're attacking every bit as quickly as a swordsman or axe murderer (unless they're using Frenzy or the like).
You've got enchantments, you've got preparations, you've got nature rituals, and you've got conditions, and you've even got a speed boosting stance. No one can buff stack like a Ranger/Elementalist. Use that to your advantage...

Preps
Apply Poison
Shots
Distracting Shot
Debilitating Shot
Pin Down
Interrupts
Clumsiness
Diversion
Defense
Throw Dirt
Elites
Concussion Shot (ranger)
Oath Shot (ranger)
um u can pick between the 2 elite skills dependin on what u want
Oath Shot will recharge all your skills
spam debilitating on any spell casters hit them with dirupting whenever they cast spells fire an oath shot recharge skills and continue to shut them down
clumsiness stops a warrior (deals dmg then knocks down) pin him poison then
keep walking ignore said warrior/melee guy move on to shutting the team down while waiting for skills to recharge just throw dirt at the person and move in
once again pure shut down u need a solid monk
u can substitute oath shot for concussion
everytime u hit a caster his spells are delayed disrupted and take forever to recharge
enjoy toying around with it as i have said before its not the best but it is fun
